Because everyone is making the Substack podcast sound so "easy," I'm always skeptical about falling for that. To make it something fun and valuable, there's a lot to do -- and it's ongoing. Unless you do seasons and take a break.
Doing it on substack as a subscriber perk could make the financial part much simpler—if you have low overhead (no studio) and enough subscribers to cover it!
I am always filled with admiration when someone sets up their own podcast. I keep toying with the idea myself. But it isn't until you read something like this post, the cost, research and time involved, do you realise it can be all consuming. My son has his own YouTube, and I know what that involves. However, you have given me an idea for my own publication. Not a podcast, but something else.
Maggie! It’s your friend Kristin. What a great article and (though I am not surprised one bit) how wonderful of you to extend yourself as a resource to all the hopeful podcasters out there! 👸 go girl.
Thank you for such a detailed explanation of your journey and how you’ve made it work! Since my podcast is brand spanking new, I was thrilled to see where my experience has been similar to yours and am taking notes on what I can do differently for the better. Really appreciate this post and really love listening to your podcast!
Although I have no intention of starting a podcast, this was very interesting. Thanks for the detail; it’s always interesting to know how things “really” work.
this is so great! I so enjoy seeing how other people put everything together and appreciate the transparency.
I'm an editor (for the mentioned Everything Cookbooks podcast!) so if anyone reading is looking for one, reach out!
"Of course, you can also hire an editor for your show at an hourly rate even if you record at home. (If there’s a show you like, listen to the credits to find out the editor’s name—that could be a good place to start.)"
I admittedly know so little about the world of podcasting and loved reading this! Thank you for your transparency and candid thoughts here. Cheers to many more episodes!
I’m doing it. I'm sweating bullets. But it's happening.
Excited to listen, Sandie!!
This is great, Maggie. It's so helpful to lay out all the details we have to think through before taking the leap.
There are many, many ways to do it, of course! But it’s definitely probably more effort and time than most people realize.

I’m sure everyone’s details are different! But the initial research can be overwhelming!
This was fun to read even as someone who is out of the podcast world!
